Crab Boil Crackers

These delicious Crab Boil Crackers were inspired by the famous Alabama Fire Crackers recipe that was everywhere several years back.  The Alabama Fire Crackers were an upgrade to the old ranch-seasoned oyster crackers recipe that I first had in the 1980s.  When I first started participating in our local gumbo festival, I wanted an interesting extra offering for our booth.  That’s how Crab Boil Crackers were born.

These crackers are very much a glow-up.  I have a few more seasoning ingredients–all pantry staples–and I use more than one kind of cracker.  You’re probably still going to need to run to the grocery store.  BUT, this is a no-bake recipe.  That’s right!  You only need to mix up the ingredients, and leave them overnight.  In the morning they will have magically transformed themselves into addictive Crab Boil Crackers.

Don’t tell anybody, but even the year we won the People’s Choice Award, we had a bunch of attendees come back to our booth, not for more gumbo, but for another handful of these delicious crackers.  People liked that the crackers had a wonderfully complex flavor, and while they were nicely spicy, the crackers weren’t just salty and hot.  A number of people asked if those were Chicken in a Biskit™ crackers?  It seems people loved those crackers as a kid and were delighted to learn that Nabisco still made them.  Same, y’all.  Same.

All you do is put the crackers in the big zipper bag, mix the oil and seasonings, and pour over the crackers.  Seal the bag and turn over a few times to evenly distribute the seasoning.  Allow them to sit for a day or two, turning a few times.  At first you will think there’s no way the crackers will absorb all the seasoning, but they do!  Crab Boil Crackers last about 3 weeks or so in an air-tight container in your pantry.  A zipper bag is fine, but I do transfer the finished crackers into a fresh bag.

Crab Boil Crackers are also excellent with Fresh Roasted Tomato Soup or Gazpacho.

Notes

*Zatarain’s Shrimp and Crab Boil original liquid concentrate should be available on the spice aisle of your supermarket.  It’s stocked near the Old Bay and other seafood seasonings.  If you can’t find it, Amazon has it here.
